Is the New Haunted Mansion Movie the Beginning of the Next Attraction Movie Trilogy? photo

Yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con, Disney announced the production of a new Haunted Mansion movie written and produced by Guillermo del Toro.  del Toro made an appearance at the announcement proclaiming the movie would be faithful to the Haunted Mansion attraction: scary and fun at the same time.  Also mentioned was the legendary Hatbox Ghost, who will be a featured character in the film.  This news spread like wildfire across the Internet, giving fans hope of erasing the memories of 2003′s horrid Haunted Mansion starring Eddie Murphy.

However, even though little details have been released so far, I think Disney is shooting for del Toro’s Haunted Mansion to be the beginning of a trilogy similar to the Pirates of the Caribbean films. The pieces are already falling into place.  A top Disney Parks attraction and a big name producer are set. The next piece of the puzzle is top actors and actresses to play the roles.  Unfortunately, the only hint given here was the Hatbox Ghost, who alone won’t attract many outside those who know Haunted Mansion lore.  Of course, this will also need a good story, but I think del Toro will be able to write something worthy of the Haunted Mansion name.

Haunted Mansion will be in 3D (insert groan here); hopefully Disney spends the money to film in 3D instead of adding the 3D effects in post-production.  I also hope, since they’re doing it in 3D, that they use 3D to its full advantage instead of just depth enhancement as we’ve seen with Alice in Wonderland and the Toy Story series.  Let’s have a few ghosts fly off the screen!

I’m looking forward to a Haunted Mansion movie worthy of the ride.  What are your thoughts on the new Haunted Mansion?  Let me know in the comments or on Twitter!

I think its a great idea. My prediction is that next in line of Disney classics to convert from the theme park to the big screen will be Jungle Cruise.
